Alt-rock veterans Violent Femmes recruited Stephen Colbert for a quirky rendition of their 1983 classic “Blister in the Sun” Tuesday on The Late Show. The web-exclusive clip features a gushing introduction from the host, who says of “Blister,” “I think I’ve played [it] a thousand times, and I can’t wait to hear a thousand and one.”
The trio perform in an acoustic setup, with live percussionist John Sparrow wielding brushes on a barbecue grill. After a brief audience sing-along, frontman Gordon Gano calls out Colbert for a cameo, which includes hushed singing and hilarious jazz-folk scatting.
After several years on hiatus, Violent Femmes reunited in 2013 with a performance at Coachella. Though their first several shows featured original drummer Victor DeLorenzo, he was later replaced by Brian Viglione (Nine Inch Nails, Dresden Dolls), who contributed to their first LP in 15 years, We Can Do Anything (out March 6th). The band has announced headlining tour dates for New Zealand, Australia and North America.
