Watch ‘The Simpsons’ Parody Stanley Kubrick Films in Halloween Episode

‘Treehouse of Horror XXV’ featured homages to ‘A Clockwork Orange,’ ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’ ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and more

The Simpsons continued their annual Halloween tradition on Sunday night with the series’ 25th “Treehouse of Horror” episode. Like past installments, it featured three short segments – but the clear highlight was “A Clockwork Yellow,” a spirited spoof of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic filmography. The above clip, courtesy of Vulture, features a rapid-fire spree of Kubrick references – from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Eyes Wide Shut to Full Metal Jacket to (briefly) Barry Lyndon – but focuses on a Clockwork Orange-centric plot.

“A Clockwork Yellow” stars Moe as a member of a droog-like London gang that leads an attack against a masked orgy – in an homage to Eyes Wide Shut. (“Welcome to the most frustrating, befuddling and, yes, erotic book release party you’ve ever attended!” says Mr. Burns.) Throughout the chaos, the writers weave in a fake-out appearance from a giant black monolith similar to the ones in 2001: A Space Odyssey (turns out to be an iPhone as seen from a forced perspective) and poke fun at the semi-obscurity of Barry Lyndon. (“Even I forget what this is in reference to,” says Comic Book Guy after getting his leg shot off in the gunfight climax.) A yellow-hued version of Mr. Kubrick himself even makes a cameo at the end.

“Treehouse of Horror XXV” also included the segments “School Is Hell,” in which Bart discovers a portal to hell through his school’s detention room, and “The Others,” wherein the Simpson family is haunted by their crudely animated doppelgangers from The Tracey Ullman Show.

It’s been an eventful Season 26 for the long-running series. So far, the show has killed off a character (Krusty the Clown’s father, Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky) and crossed cartoon paths with Peter Griffin and the Family Guy cast. Last month, the show celebrated its 25th anniversary with a cameo-filled extravaganza at the Hollywood Bowl. A crossover episode with Futurama will air on November 9th.
