Watch Spielberg, Coppola Laud WWII Filmmakers in New Netflix Docu-Series

‘Five Came Back’ examines wartime work of John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, George Stevens

Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and Guillermo Del Toro examine the work of five filmmakers who captured the front lines of World War II in the intriguing new trailer for Netflix’s new docu-series, Five Came Back.

The series chronicles the wartime work of John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra and George Stevens, whose documentaries helped mobilize war efforts at home and changed the perspectives of many Americans wary of entering the war in the first place. The film also examines how covering WWII affected each filmmaker personally and professionally, as well as the larger role film played throughout the era as a tool for propaganda.

Along with Spielberg, Coppola and Del Toro, Five Came Back will feature interviews with Paul Greengrass and Lawrence Kasdan, while Meryl Streep narrates. Five Came Back is based on Mark Harris’ book of the same name. Documentarian, and longtime Spielberg collaborator, Laurent Bouzereau directed the series.

All three episodes of Five Came Back premiere March 31st. Netflix will also add 13 documentaries discussed in the series to its streaming catalog, per Variety.
