“Thirty years ago, I probably wouldn’t have accepted this role,” the venerated actor admitted, emphasizing that the part is animated. “But I’m now honored and delighted to be playing the role of the emoji Poop.”
Conan O’Brien, curious about all aspects of poop-playing, asked Stewart how he digested the news that he’d be voicing a piece of fecal matter. “I don’t know how you’re going to feel about this,” he recalled his agent saying. “I listened to him say ‘poop,’ and I said, ‘Yes! … How diverse could an emoji role get? Poop is it. That’s the one.”
Stewart was visibly delighted at the opportunity for literal toilet humor, joking to the host, “You want to know how I prepared for the role.” (The answer: “A lot of research.”) Addressing his critics, he said, “A lot of people have said for years, ‘Patrick Stewart’s acting is shit.’ Now I’m going to prove to them it’s true!”
Sony Pictures announced Patrick’s Poop part in January, leading to a frenzy of hilarious headlines. The Emoji Movie, out August 4th, also features T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley), Maya Rudolph Ilana Glazer, James Corden, Steven Wright, Rob Riggle and Tom Kane.
