With general election polls tightening, Hillary Clinton once again repudiated Trump’s divisive rhetoric, but Bee pointed out that while a majority of Americans agree that Trump is biased against women and minorities, they don’t care. “A lot of voters have decided that racism and sexism aren’t great, but they’re not a dealbreaker – kinda like a sandwich with too much mayo,” Bee cracked. “They think they can just scrape off the extra white nonsense.”
As for why Americans are so comfortable with such hateful ideology, Bee suggested it’s the implicit message they receive from a network like NBC. The network propped up Trump’s celebrity long before his presidential run, but while he was still promoting birtherism.
While NBC did cut ties with Trump after he called Mexicans “rapists” and “criminals,” the network has continued to welcome him onto flagship shows like Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show, where he recently returned to discuss board games and his childhood home and get his hair mussed by Jimmy Fallon.
“Sure, he’s making life palpably dangerous for Muslims and immigrants, but hey, he’s good entertainment,” Bee said. “Here’s a thought: When Holocaust survivors are telling you, ‘Hey, this guy gives me deja vu,’ maybe don’t invite him up into your house to play with your adorable children.” Bee then cut to Trump’s recent interview with Fallon.
“Network execs, and a lot of their audience, can ignore how very dangerous Trump is because to them, he isn’t,” Bee added. “They’re not gonna be deported. They’re not gonna live under a president who thinks of them as a collection of sex toys. They’re not racist – they just don’t mind if other people are. Which is just as bad.”
