Watch Michael Che, Colin Jost Detail Rejected ‘SNL’ Sketches on ‘Seth Meyers’

‘Weekend Update’ hosts recall surreal, unused ideas, like Donald Trump’s “Rosetta Stone Mexican,” origin of phrase “screw the pooch”

Weekend Update hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost recalled some of their favorite rejected Saturday Night Live sketches on Tuesday’s Late Night With Seth Meyers.

One politically slanted idea involved host (and then presidential candidate) Donald Trump hawking a really terrible product: “I pitched him an idea that he weirdly didn’t want to do where he was the spokesman for ‘Rosetta Stone Mexican,'” Jost said. “He would teach you phrases to someone who was Mexican, like, ‘You’re going to build the wall.'”

Che recalled the real-life awkward banter that led him to pursue a sketch about the first guy to ever say the phrase ‘Screw the pooch.’ “An intern one time messed up a coffee order, and I was like, ‘Hey, I didn’t order this,'” he noted. “And he said, ‘Sorry about that, Che. I really screwed the pooch on that one.’ And I said, ‘What was that?’ And he goes, ‘Screw the pooch – it means I made a mistake.’ And I said, ‘No, man. It means you had sex with a dog. And you should probably stop saying that in a workplace environment.’ So I wanted to just dig into that guy because I’m sure he probably had sex with a dog one time and just kept pretending that it was a mistake that everybody else makes.”

Other could’ve-been-classics included “Heroin P.M.” (“non-drowsy heroin from the makers of Cocaine P.M.,” Jost cracked), single packs of Viagra, a game show set inside a CVS called “Who Works Here?”, and “the first black guy to boo Jackie Robinson.”

“My favorite sketches are really racially charged,” Che explained. “Chris Hemsworth hosted, and I wanted to do a sketch where The Avengers save the day, but in the process Thor accidentally kills an unarmed black teenager. He said it wouldn’t help with tickets!”
