Issa Rae stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert ahead of Sunday’s return of her Emmy-nominated show Insecure. She talked about meeting celebrities and her mom’s concern for the show’s racy content.
At the top of her segment, Colbert congratulated Rae for her Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy nomination. The pair discussed the pros and cons of award shows, specifically the amount of alcohol and getting starstruck. Rae recalled one particular moment speaking to an extremely friendly Rihanna at the Met Gala earlier this year.
“I went up to her and she was so friendly and nice, I wasn’t expecting that,” Rae said. “[But] any chance we had to be best friends, I ruined it with my drunken nervousness and starstruckness.”
Colbert called upon Rae to also clear up rumors that she turned down Drake at a Golden Globes party. According to Rae, all she did was run into him as he was leaving the HBO after party as she was entering it. He invited her to the Netflix party, but she had to go to the one for the network her show airs on.
Rae also discussed her mom calling her show “porn” for the racy content. “‘I don’t know if this is HBO doing this or this is you but I can’t watch this anymore,'” Rae said her mom told her. “I said, ‘Mom, if you don’t like this episode, you definitely shouldn’t watch episode six.”
