Watch Dave Grohl Jam With Preservation Hall Jazz Band on ‘Colbert’

Foo Fighters rocker jumps on drums for impromptu performance of “Santiago”

Dave Grohl joined Preservation Hall Jazz BandJon Batiste and Stay Human for a monster jam on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday.

Grohl was on hand with his mother, Virginia, to discuss From Cradle to Stageher new book about rock star moms. After the interview, Grohl leapt off the couch and jumped behind a drum set to join Preservation Hall and The Late Show house band for a fiery rendition of the former’s new song, “Santiago.”

This isn’t the first time Grohl has teamed with Preservation Hall Jazz Band: In 2014, members of Preservation Hall joined the Foo Fighters onstage during a surprise performance at the jazz outfit’s titular headquarters in New Orleans.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band performed several songs from their new album, So It Is, during The Late Show Wednesday. TV On the Radio’s Dave Sitek produced the new record, which was inspired by the band’s 2015 trip to Cuba. Preservation Hall Jazz Band will play a handful of summer festival dates in support of the album, starting May 7th with a hometown set at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. They’re also set to play Bonnaroo and Arroyo Seco.

As for Grohl, the musician penned the foreword to From Cradle to Stage and has been helping his mom promote the book. Along with Virginia Grohl’s own stories, From Cradle to Stage includes interviews Virginia Grohl conducted with the mothers of other musicians, including Miranda Lambert, Dr. Dre, Amy Winehouse, Pharrell and Tom Morello.
