The Roots’ singer, Black Thought, opened the song at a long boardroom table, rapping the musical’s signature anthem for a group of head-nodding suits before leading them to a stage where Ortiz delivered his spitfire verse from a pulpit. Busta Rhymes brought “My Shot” to a bombastic end, emerging in a massive fur coat decked out with some 18th century flare and tearing through his final verse with gruff aplomb.
The Hamilton Mixtape arrived last week and was executive produced by Black Thought and Questlove alongside the musical’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Roots perform several songs on the mixtape, including “You’ll Be Back” with Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon. Other featured performers include Nas, Usher, Sia, Miguel, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Wiz Khalifa, John Legend and Chance the Rapper.
