Green Day singer stages intimate solo performance of ‘Revolution Radio’ closer

Billie Joe Armstrong delivered a moving performance of Green Day‘s “Ordinary World” on Conan Wednesday.

Armstrong took the stage solo, strumming an acoustic guitar and singing the folk-tinged ballad that closes the band’s latest album, Revolution Radio. With the intimate set-up, Armstrong’s aching voice carried the song from its simple but affecting lyrics – “The days into years roll by/ It’s where that I live until I die” – to his sweet, wordless coos.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Armstrong spoke about “Ordinary World,” saying, “After all of the chaos that’s on the album, whether it’s pop culture or whatever new apps we’re using, everything gets so complicated. At some point you want something simple. That’s sort of what ‘Ordinary World’ is about.”

While “Ordinary World” closes Revolution Radio, Armstrong wrote the tune for a movie of the same-name in which he stars as an aging musician. Ordinary World arrived in October and co-stars Fred Armisen and Selma Blair.
