Watch Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino Discuss Industry Sexism on ‘Daily Show’

Singer reflects on accusations of sexual misconduct made by peers and herself against music publicist Heathcliff Berru

Best Coast‘s Bethany Cosentino stopped by The Daily Show Wednesday night to discuss music industry sexism and her accusations of sexual misconduct against music publicist Heathcliff Berru.

Cosentino’s talk with host Trevor Noah comes four months after she publicly supported the Dirty Projectors‘ Amber Coffman, who was the first in what later turned into a series of women to share her story about being allegedly harassed and assaulted by Berru. Inspired by Coffman, Cosentino and many other women in the industry shared their stories, which later led to the publicist stepping down as CEO of Life or Death PR.

“As a woman, I felt it was so important to support my female peer,” Cosentino explained. “I didn’t realize it was going to become such a huge thing … I thought, ‘I’m going to back Amber because that’s what I feel I should do.’ This is an incredibly important conversation that needs to be had.”

The Best Coast singer spent her time with Noah discussing how ingrained sexism is in her industry, citing examples of men at venues believing she doesn’t know how to use an amp because she’s the only woman in her band. “I hope that there is one woman out there that is now standing up to her boss, or standing up to a man in that world that is making her feel less than because she’s a woman,” the singer said.
