Robert Smigel’s poop-prone puppet Triumph the Insult Comic Dog will return to TV sometime within the next few years. Adult Swim has greenlighted an as-yet-untitled, live-action sitcom starring former 30 Rock actor Jack McBrayer opposite Triumph.

The show’s brief explains that McBrayer plays Jack, a former child star who appeared on a Lassie-type series featuring Triumph as the canine in the Eighties and Nineties. Since its cancellation, Triumph has descended into decadence and brought Jack down with him. Now, with 15 years of hindsight, Jack is happily living a life off-camera – but Triumph has made his way back into the actor’s life. Strangely, the brief did not mention pooping – considering Triumph’s trademark punch line is tacking “. . . for me to poop on” onto seemingly benign statements – but as Triumph has proven on his many Conan appearances, anything is possible.

McBrayer made an appearance on the finale of another Adult Swim show, Childrens Hospital, last year, playing a soldier hoping to prevent a catastrophe. Melee ensues when series regulars Rob Corddry and Ken Marino set off fireworks unknowingly near a weapons locker at a U.S. Army base in Japan, so McBrayer’s character offers to show them the weapons room.

When 30 Rock was winding down in 2013, McBrayer told Rolling Stone that those close to him in his home state of Georgia do not watch his shows. “My family doesn’t get it,” he said. “They don’t watch SNL. There are no references for them to grab on to. There’s not a lot I can do to be like, ‘OK, here are these crazy references we’re making,’ because some of them I don’t get!” Overall, he said, “It’s a very specific taste. . . ” for Triumph to poop on.
