Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe Gaffe: The Sports World Reacts

Sports-centric social media has a field day after poor Steve mistakenly announces Miss Colombia as the pageant winner

Oh Steve: Harvey had a bad night at the Miss Universe pageant.

Everybody is talking about Steve Harvey’s Sunday night blunder. Even Magic Johnson, for some reason.

Just in case you weren’t watching last night’s Miss Universe pageant (what’s wrong with you?!?) or have managed to stay off the Internet in the 12 hours since the competition concluded, let us bring you up to speed. On Sunday, Harvey – who hosted Miss Universe 2015 – had a cringe-inducing live TV moment for the ages, when he crowned Miss Colombia as the winner…when she was actually the first runner-up.

So as Ariadna Gutierrez stood there basking in her triumph, a mortified Harvey was forced to announce that he had made a mistake, de-crown Miss Colombia and announce that Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was the actual winner. Needless to say, it was pretty awkward (as was his since-deleted tweet afterward).

Because it was the biggest thing to happen on an otherwise sleepy Sunday night, Twitter was out in full force in the aftermath of the event. Everybody’s favorite Crying Jordan meme made a grand return, the NFL’s referees made yet another mistake and Odell Beckham Jr. bounced back from his shitshow with Josh Norman to make the biggest catch of his career.

The Washington Wizards also weighed-in on the topic, saying they’re glad Harvey wasn’t the announcer for the 2010 NBA Draft when they took superstar John Wall with the No. 1 pick. I bet they wish Harvey was calling the 2001 NBA Draft, though, huh?

Fortunately for Harvey, it wasn’t all laughing and pointing. Former NFL running back Emmitt Smith, who was one of the judges for the contest, and Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson tried to put a positive spin on the entire debacle by jumping to his side.
