Louis C.K. ‘Disappoints’ on ‘Letterman,’ Talks ‘Deflategate’

Comedian jokes about focusing on bored faces at shows and his hometown New England Patriots

After the “historic” Northeast blizzard forced Louis C.K. to cancel his fourth show at Madison Square Garden, the comedian made a last-minute appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, where he delved into a topic both timely and near to his heart: Disappointing people.

Despite several prior sold-out shows at MSG, C.K. said that every time he looks out into the throngs of people, he focuses only on a select handful: “There’s at least, in 15,000 people, 1,000 disappointed people,” C.K. cracked. “And I see them all; I see them still today. During the show, a guy’s going, ‘I dunno.’ Those are the ones you really see.”

Letterman did his best to assuage C.K.’s fears, joking he often feels the same looking out into his own audience and later asking why those disappointed people would bother ordering tickets and showing up to the show in the first place. “Cause they’re just miserable pricks,” C.K. shrugged. “That’s not their fault!”

But C.K.’s knack for disappointing people extends far beyond a thousand bummed out faces. The comedian recalled a failed audition at the famed Comedy Store in Los Angeles — where Letterman got his start — saying the club’s owner, Mitzi Shore, tried to shoo him off the stage after just 10 seconds. While C.K. has played the Comedy Store since, even shooting his latest stand-up special there, Letterman once again tried to chalk it up to a misunderstanding. “That’s really nice, Dave,” C.K. said, “because you stuck up for me against the pricks at the MSG and Mitzi Shore — but the fact is people just don’t like me.”

C.K. also chimed in on “deflategate,” explaining his hometown New England Patriots’ oily scheming in the most pragmatic way possible: “Well, ’cause they wanna win real bad. So sometimes you do stuff that’s not…fair. So you can win. I have no problem with that, I think it’s hilarious, and why not? It’s a stupid football game. Deflate the balls, poke a guy in the eye, or whatever.”
