Kimmel Imagines Donald Trump’s Prez Run as April Fools’ Joke

Late-night host pictures a world in which the last nine-and-a-half months were one elaborate prank

We regret to inform you that Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy is not, in fact, an elaborate hoax.

On Thursday night, Jimmy Kimmel Live! aired a sketch in which Donald Trump “confessed” that his entire campaign has just been one long, protracted punking of all of us. The video is an April Fool’s Day prank; Donald Trump is still running for president. Joke’s on you, America! This is still your reality.

“Nine months ago, I announced my candidacy for president. The journey has been an unbelievably interesting one and fascinating,” Kimmel’s Trump impersonator said. “Our country is totally divided, there’s so much hatred, so that’s what I made my campaign about.”

This is all true! Our country is divided and, as Trump’s rallies have repeatedly shown, there is a lot of hatred.

Also true: the part where “Trump” says, “I will tell you this, and I can say it with certainty, I had no idea it would go this far.” As Stephanie Cegielski, ex-communications director for the Make America Great Again super PAC, claimed earlier this week, from the very beginning Trump was only running to bolster his image. He never planned on winning the nomination.

The punchline — that Trump was kidding this whole time and he would actually prefer we all vote for Hillary — isn’t a joke to folks like Jeb Bush, either. He’s just one of several conservatives who have advanced the theory that Clinton and Trump have been conspiring to get her in the White House from the beginning.
