“Sometimes when you love someone, you will do crazy things,” the nefarious Villanelle (Jodie Comer) says in a voice-over in a new trailer for the second season of Killing Eve. The first season of the quirky contract-killer drama showed how she became fascinated with detective Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) to the point that she’d taunted her in person. Now the one-minute glimpse of the new season, which returns to BBC America on April 7th, shows the two women’s mutual obsession with each other starts to get the better of them.
It also offers lighter scenes, such as when a young woman approaches Villanelle and asks to take a photo of her. “Wow, you look amazing,” the girl says. “Can I take a picture of you for my Instagram?” “No. No, of course not,” Villanelle replies. “Get a real life.” There are also plenty of scenes of her in her various disguises (pink hair, glasses, bellhop uniform) and Polastri looking more and more frustrated about the killer’s elusiveness.
The series, which was created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and based on author Luke Jennings’ Codename Villanelle series of books, became a sleeper hit when it premiered last year. Earlier this year, Oh won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama at an awards ceremony she was hosting. She was the first woman of Asian descent to win the award since 1981. During her acceptance speech, she took a moment to thank her parents in Korean. “My parents are amazing people and Internet sensations and they are so happy,” she said after winning. “For Asian kids to make our parents happy, it is so fulfilling.”
