GoldenThumb: Fallon Challenges Pierce Brosnan to N64 Game ‘GoldenEye’

Host emerges with an easy win as the unlikely competitors square off with the 1997 game

Jimmy Fallon may have revoked Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond credentials on Tuesday night’s Tonight Show, as he challenged the one-time cinematic spy to a competitive round of GoldenEye 007, the classic 1997 N64 game, and emerged from the battle victorious. “Hello, Mr. Bond!” the host boasted, playfully taunting his guest and wielding his outdated controller like a futuristic weapon.

The game’s corresponding film, 1995’s GoldenEye, marked the first of Brosnan’s four appearances in the Bond franchise – but not even that kind of spy pedigree guarantees success in the virtual world. In the above clip, Fallon pumps himself up for combat, calling the N64 title “one of the best video games of all time” and saying it’s always been a “childhood dream” to face down a real-life Bond. Meanwhile, Brosnan admits that he was never good at the game, saying, “I played it once and shot myself in the foot.”

The buildup is admittedly more fun than the result, as Brosnan awkwardly fidgets with the controller and utilizes an accidental karate chop instead of his gun. (“When in doubt,” he wisely instructs, “chop.”) Fallon takes advantage of Brosnan’s limited dexterity, slaying the debonair actor’s N64 proxy via repeated gunshots to the head.

It may be sad to watch 007 get beaten at his own game, but that’s always been Fallon’s style: Back in 2009, the comedian defeated golf legend Tiger Woods at his own Wii game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, during a three-hole challenge in Times Square.
