Fox has picked up a new musical game show centered around the song-identifying app Shazam, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Beat Shazam will pit contestants against each other in a game of “name that tune,” with the winners advancing to face the Shazam app for a chance to win the grand prize. Reality TV magnate Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Voice) will executive produce the series. A premiere date has yet to be announced.
Shazam was founded in 1999 and long functioned as a pay service where users dialed a number, held their phones up to a speaker and received a text with the name of the song the were listening to. With the advent of smartphones, the Shazam process was streamlined and the app has become a music fan staple, with hundreds of millions of active users worldwide and over 25 billion Shazam searches.
Several years ago, Shazam began expanding into television. In 2012, they partnered with several brands to make their Super Bowl commercials Shazam-enabled, and later teamed with American Idol to offer exclusive content to viewers who “tagged” the show as they watched. That same year, Shazam also rolled out a new function that allowed users to identify the television program they were watching by its audio.
