Fallon and Hathaway Cover Rap Broadway-Style on ‘The Tonight Show’

Host and actress take on Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar

Jimmy Fallon and Anne Hathaway gave a few familiar hits the old razzle-dazzle on The Tonight Show Tuesday night. Following in Fallon’s “History of Rap” framework, the pair offered a medley of hip-hop tracks sung in a Broadway showtunes style, with Fallon at the piano.

“Hey Anne, what do you say we break them off a little something West Coast style?” Fallon suggested, before the two launched into Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice.” Up next came 50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” with roughly the same minor-key melody and Fallon’s jaunty keyboard work. The medley ended with Kendrick Lamar’s good kid m.A.A.d City track “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.”

Fallon featured the same rap-meets-showtunes set-up with Ariana Grande this past September, but Hathaway did the singer one better in her deranged commitment to the act. In the wind-down on “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe,” Hathaway even took the opportunity to throw a little aggression down at her detractors: “Oh you dirty Hatha-hatin’ bitch-ass bitch, don’t kill my vibe.”

It’s a massive week for music on The Tonight Show in the lead-up to Thursday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Last night’s musical guest was inductee Yusuf Islam (a.k.a. Cat Stevens), and Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl will appear tomorrow, with Stevie Nicks as musical guest. The week wraps up with a performance by Kiss on Friday night.
