Doctor Who fans can preview the adventures of Jodie Whittaker, the 13th overall and first female incarnation of the time-traveling extra-terrestrial “Time Lord,” in the first full trailer for the upcoming 11th season.
While the clip is light on actual plot, it shows Whittaker running from explosions and staring down a new adversary — what appears to be a twisted knot of electrical cables. It also showcases her crew: Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh).
The protagonist nods to her modest heroism at various points in the trailer. “I’m the Doctor — when people need help, I never refuse,” Whittaker’s character says in one scene, adding later, “Sometimes I see things need fixin’. I do what I can.”
The new season premieres with its first episode, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” via BBC America on Sunday, October 7th at an unspecified time, followed by an encore in its new primetime evening slot. Subsequent episodes will also air on Sundays.
“A moment like this of being the first woman cast as something,” Whittaker recently told Rolling Stone, “it makes you really think about your sex, whereas actually what you want to do is play a part where your gender is irrelevant. I am a woman, so I don’t need to play that. And so for me, this was the most freeing experience because there’s no right or wrong way to do it. The rules went out the window.’”
