Colbert: The One Word That Sums Up Trump, Clinton Debate

‘Late Show’ host skewers candidates’ lopsided expectations, sniffles

Stephen Colbert broke down the the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during an epic live monologue on The Late Show Monday.

The host opened with the lopsided expectations for both candidates, drawing the fine line Clinton had to walk between “confident but not smug, knowledgeable without being a know-it-all, charming without being affected, commanding but not shrill, also likable, authoritative, warm and not coughing. Meanwhile, Donald Trump had to not commit murder — on camera.”

Elsewhere, Colbert honored Clinton’s debate preparedness with a new nickname — Preparation H — and cracked that Trump’s constant sniffing made him “sound like the coked-up best man in the bathroom at a wedding.” Colbert also used Trump’s obsession with “law and order” as a chance to toss in a few cheeky “dun dun” effects, but also questioned the Republican nominee’s interest in “cybering.” “Trump’s advice is, has America tried unplugging terrorism and plugging it back in?” Colbert cracked.

Despite all the jokes at Trump’s expense, Colbert did give credence to one thing the candidate said many times during the 90-minute slugfest. “There was really only one word that summed up how this whole debate, this whole election feels,” Colbert said, before rolling a montage of all the times Trump interrupted Clinton with, “Wrong!”
