Chris Cornell, Avett Brothers Walk in Pearl Jam’s ‘Footsteps’

Trio kicks off tribute week on ‘Fallon’ with haunting cover

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell paid tribute to his grunge brothers-in-flannel Pearl Jam on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday, performing “Footsteps” alongside the Avett Brothers. While Seth and Scott Avett picked out a sparse, simple arrangement of the Lost Dogs cut on guitar and banjo, Cornell added scattered harmonica licks whenever he wasn’t howling each note with the proper ammount of wounded lonesomeness.

The trio’s steely, haunting cover of “Footsteps” was the first in Late Night‘s week-long celebration of Pearl Jam, who just released their 10th studio LP, Lightning Bolt. Tonight, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes will make his first TV appearance in nearly two years to cover “Corduroy,” backed by a few surprise special guests; and on Wednesday, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready will perform with country star Dierks Bently and the Roots.

Of course there can be no Pearl Jam week without Pearl Jam themselves, and the band will be on hand to debut new music from Lightning Bolt on both Thursday and Friday to wrap up the festivities.

Along with getting their own week at Late Night – an honor previously bestowed upon Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake – you’ll be able to catch Pearl Jam throughout the World Series: The band recently signed a deal with Fox Sports that places 48 of their songs, including all 12 from Lightning Bolt within the channel’s Series’ programming, which kicks off tomorrow.
