Black Mirror previewed its upcoming stand-alone movie, Bandersnatch, with an ominous new trailer. The “event” film, which debuts Friday, December 28th on Netflix, follows a young programmer named Stefan (Dunkirk‘s Fionn Whitehead) who plummets down a surreal rabbit hole while attempting to create a computer game based on a classic adventure novel.
“I keep having these vivid dreams, like thinking weird things,” Stefan says to open the Eighties-set clip. We see the protagonist accepting his job at the game company (which his boss describes as “a hit factory, like Motown but for computer games”) and flushing medicine down the toilet. “When it’s a concept piece, a bit of madness is what you need,” a coworker instructs. Later, a woman on a TV screen warns, “Your fate has been dictated – you’re not in control,” as his reality blurs with surreal hallucinations.
While the sci-fi anthology series has created several feature-length episodes in its four seasons, Bandersnatch will be its first officially billed film. David Slade, who previously helmed the Season Four installment “Metalhead,” will direct the project; Will Poulter, Craig Parkinson, Alice Lowe and Asim Chaudhry will also appear in the installment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Netflix recently renewed Black Mirror for a fifth season, though they’ve yet to announce a premiere date. In October, the network teased a “choose your own adventure” installment of the Charlie Brooker-created show.
