Miley Cyrus concluded her day-long NBC takeover with back-to-back appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Night Wednesday. The pop star began her day on Today, promoting her new single "Malibu," and that night unveiled her latest shocking career turn when she interrupted Jimmy Fallon's monologue dressed as The Tonight Show's beloved character, Hashtag the Panda (previously played by Ben Stiller and Chris Rock).
After Fallon joked about President Donald Trump canceling a trip to China when he learned the country didn't have a single Panda Express, Cyrus – in full panda regalia – boogied across the stage to a brassy melody from the Roots. When Cyrus finally popped off her panda mask, Fallon was incredulous, asking how dressing up as a panda would help her perform "Malibu."
"Look that's what I'm into," Cyrus quipped. "Don't judge me!"
Cyrus then put her panda head back on and danced off stage and into the 30 Rock hallways, eventually emerging on Late Night With Seth Meyers. There she stood-in as leader of the 8G Band – sans panda suit – and led the group through a quick instrumental rendition of "Malibu."
"Malibu" marks Cyrus' first single from her as-yet-untitled new record, which is expected to arrive this year. The pop-rock track marks a major sonic shift from her hip-hop heavy 2013 album Bangerz and her 2015 psych romp with the Flaming Lips, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz. Cyrus recorded her new album with producer/multi-instrumentalist Oren Yoel.
