James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal become entrepreneurs in seedy 1970s New York City in the debut teaser for HBO series The Deuce.

Franco takes on dual roles as shaggy-haired twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, a gambler and bartender who become fronts for the mob in Times Square. Gyllenhaal plays Eileen "Candy" Merrell, an independent sex worker who transitions into the booming porn industry.

The clip showcases the sordid atmosphere of the era, teasing gunfire, violent police altercations, sex, nightclub boozing and a marquee promoting the premiere of 1972 "Golden Age" porn flick Deep Throat. The series will also explore the rise of HIV, the real estate boom and police efforts to crack down on the adult film trade.

David Simon – former creator, showrunner, executive producer and head writer of acclaimed HBO series The Wire – created The Deuce with novelist/former Wire writer George Pelecanos. The eight-episode first season premieres September 10th.

Emily Meade, Anna Glover, Gary Carr, Jamie Neumann and Dominique Fishback will co-star in The Deuce alongside former Wire actors Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Gbenga Akinnagbe and Chris Bauer.
