'The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story' (February 2nd)

Not since the case's verdict itself has there been as big a surprise surrounding Orenthal James Simpson as the critical response to this miniseries based on his era-defining trial. After all, a fictionalization of one of the most heavily televised events of all time — starring John Travolta, David Schwimmer, and Cuba Gooding Jr., and produced by Glee/American Horror Story/Scream Queens camp master Ryan Murphy — could have been as tasteless as an overnight visit from Kato Kaelin. But thanks to Making a Murderer et al., America is in the grip of a full-fledged true-crime craze, and the case that helped define modern high-profile criminal justice is fertile ground for exploration. And as the anthology format the show has adopted proves more and more promising (Fargo, anyone?), the gloves are truly off. STC
