Watch Stephen Colbert Spoof Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Nightmare

“I blame Russian hackers,” ‘Late Show’ host says of singer’s disastrous performance before technical glitches mar his monologue

Stephen Colbert and the Late Show returned from their winter break Tuesday to spoof the biggest pop culture story of 2017 so far: Mariah Carey’s disastrous New Year’s Eve performance.

“2016 was rough, but I am staying positive about 2017. The year is starting off great for everyone but Mariah Carey,” Colbert said of the singer’s high profile Times Square mishap, which featured Carey struggling to perform her songs due to a faulty in-ear monitor. “I blame Russian hackers. Here’s the thing: I’m on Team Mariah here. This was not her fault.”

Colbert begins to invite Carey to the Late Show to explain her side of the situation, only his prompter cuts out and suddenly the host is flanked by dancers with large feathers who parade Colbert around the stage as he struggles to find the words to say, like Carey’s ill-fated performance.

Following Carey’s NYE mishap, both the singer’s team and Dick Clark Productions blamed the other for the viral moment that kickstarted 2017. Carey’s manager also accused the production company of keeping Carey’s Times Square gaffe in the Rockin’ Eve special’s West Coast feed because they “want eyeballs at any expense.”

In an interview Tuesday, Carey discussed her “horrible” New Year’s experience.

“All I can say is Dick Clark was an incredible person and I was lucky enough to work with him when I first started in the music business,” Carey said. “I’m of the opinion that Dick Clark would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time.”

Mariah Carey said she was “mortified” by her disastrous New Year’s Eve performance.
