Watch Pete Townshend Discuss Songwriting in ‘Lambert & Stamp’ Doc

“There was a sense that everything about the band was being honored in the studio,” says Who guitarist

Lambert & Stamp gives fans of the Who an intimate glimpse at Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, the duo who helped mold the group into the rock icons they are today. Watch an exclusive clip of Pete Townshend discussing the mentorship Lambert offered during the Who’s early recording sessions.

The documentary recounts how the pair stumbled upon the legendary English rock band while looking for a burgeoning act to document on film. Then called the High Numbers, the band were quickly taken under the magnetic pair’s wing, helping hone Townshend’s songwriting. Lambert and Stamp also convinced the group to revert to their original name: the Who.

“There was a sense that everything about the band was being honored in the studio,” says the guitarist in the clip. For Townshend, Lambert had an excellent curatorial eye when it came to songwriting sessions. “If I had written three songs and presented them to him, they were all good,” he says. “He wouldn’t say ‘They’re all good, but that one’s great.’ It would be ‘They’re all good, and let’s work on that one.’ What I started to realize over a period of many years was that the one he picked to work on was the one he thought was either promising or great.”

Lambert & Stamp premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and is due in theaters on April 3rd.
