Watch Jon Stewart Fawn Over Ad-Rock on ‘Daily Show’
The Beastie Boys’ Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz brought out the giddy fanboy in Jon Stewart during a loose, laid-back interview on The Daily Show Monday night.
Though Horovitz ostensibly was promoting his new film, While We’re Young, the pair talked about everything but, including their disconcertingly similar looks, the musician’s massive record collection and whether or not Horovitz could pull off a porkpie hat. Stewart even let Horovitz sit behind his desk for a second, where he offered up his astute impression of the host, cracking, “Politics and jokes and stuff.”
While Stewart was ready to ask Horovitz about his musical legacy, the pair quickly got sidetracked when the latter asked if he could take home one of the Daily Show mugs. A query ensued into whether the King Ad-Rock himself secretly collected mugs, or anything else, to which he responded, “I got a bunch of crap, yeah!”
Among that crap is a massive record collection, though Horovitz admitted he no longer goes crate -digging. “It’s too deep, it’s too much, I can’t do it right now,” he said. “I have thousands of records from years and years and years, and thousands of 45s, and I don’t listen to them enough. I don’t spend enough time with them, so they’ll be upset if I’m going to get more friends.” As for which record would be the maddest? The Meters’ Cabbage Alley, which Horovitz said he found while laying on the floor of a Pittsburgh record store, scouring bins filled with LPs that hadn’t been shelved.
The pair then briefly touched on Horovitz’s new musical endeavor — playing bass in comedian-singer Bridget Everett’s band, the Tender Moments — as well as what kind of hat would best suit him. Stewart then closed out the chat with this endearing admission: “You are one of my favorite performers of all time, and I never get the chance to hang out with you. We’re having a tender moment, but the interview ended 10 minutes ago. So this is all me keeping you here longer, because I don’t know that I’ll ever get this chance again.”
“Why are we doing this now, and we didn’t do this a couple years ago?” Horovitz asked. “Because you don’t answer my calls,” said Stewart with a grin.
