Watch Joanna Newsom Sharpen Larry King’s Harp Technique

Musician also talks love of Kendrick Lamar, hatred of Spotify during ‘Larry King Now’ interview

Larry King has interviewed world leaders and A-list celebrities, but he’s never looked more satisfied than when Joanna Newsom taught him to play rudimentary harp. Newsom recently joined the host for his web series Larry King Now, instructing the journalist on the proper mechanics of the glissando technique.

“That was beautiful,” King says, after a test-run. “Joanna, step away!” Bursting into laughter, the musician congratulates King on his new skill, saying, “That was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.”

Elsewhere, Newsom talks with the host about her love of rap music (“I love Kendrick Lamar. He’s my favorite right now. I love Kanye.”) and dream musical collaborations (Lamar, Dolly Parton).

She calls husband Andy Samberg “probably the biggest super-fan” of her music. “He’s my favorite person in the world,” she says of the actor-comedian. “He’s the person I would most want to hang out with at any given moment.”

The singer-harpist also reinforces her recent negative statements about Spotify, saying the streaming platform is “based on the idea of circumventing the payment of artists.” However, she clarifies, “I’m not opposed to streaming. I understand that the world is shifting, and the way that music is valued and monetized is shifting, and I’m OK with that.”

In October, Newsom released her fourth studio album, Divers, which ranked Number 29 on Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Albums of 2015 list.
