Watch Dr. Dre, Eminem Recall First Meeting, Making ‘My Name Is’

Pair discuss origins of Em’s first hit in new clip from HBO’s ‘The Defiant Ones’

Dr. Dre and Eminem recall their first meeting and the origins of their first hit together in a clip from the new HBO documentary, The Defiant Ones. Both remember a sense of awe permeating that initial encounter: For Eminem, it was meeting one of his idols. For Dre, it was seeing his new protégé show up in a bright yellow sweatsuit.

“I’m looking at Dre like, ‘Dude I see you on TV all the time – you one of my biggest influences in life,'” Eminem said.

The pair eventually hit the studio together, where Dre played Eminem a handful of tracks he was working on. The first was a beat featuring a sample of Labi Siffre’s 1975 song, “I Got The…” and just moments after pressing play, Eminem began spitting the hook for what would become his 1999 breakout single, “My Name Is.”

“That’s what happened,” Dre says. “Our first day, in the first few minutes of us being together in the studio.”

The Defiant Ones chronicles the varied and intersecting careers of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. The series premiered July 9th and its final two episodes air tonight, the 11th and tomorrow, the 12th.
