Watch Dave Grohl Talk Bad Grades With Mom on ‘Colbert’

Mother, son discuss Virginia Grohl’s new book about raising rockers, ‘From Cradle to Stage’

Dave Grohl endured the embarrassment of having his sixth grade report card shared on national TV during an interview alongside his mother, Virginia Grohl, on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday. The Grohls were on hand to discuss Virginia’s new book, From Cradle to Stage: Stories From the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars.

Colbert happily detailed Grohl’s poor marks in categories like “Respects Authority” and “Accepts Responsibility,” though the rocker jumped in to defend himself, quipping, “You know I gotta be honest: I was kicking ass up until first grade, and then it was all down hill from there.”

Despite her son’s struggles in school, Virginia Grohl – a public school teacher – spoke about recognizing that her son’s talents lay elsewhere and allowing him to tour Europe with the band Scream when he was 17-years-old. While Virginia admitted the trip made her a little nervous, she added, “He was going to be playing music in Paris and in Amsterdam, and I was staying behind in Fairfax County in the classroom – I almost wanted to go with him!”

Along with Virginia Grohl’s own stories, From Cradle to Stage includes interviews with the mothers of other musicians including Miranda Lambert, Dr. Dre, Amy Winehouse, Pharrell and Tom Morello.
