From the start, O’Brien’s lesson with his instructor, Jin Shil, was doomed to fail as he continually flubbed her name and tried to figure out the appropriate amount of eye contact to make. He also struggled with basic phrases like “How much?,” “I like it,” and “It hurt,” forcing Jin Shil to teach him the word for “dirty.”
Unfortunately, O’Brien’s attempt to explain that special brand of American-Irish Catholic repression didn’t go over well, either.
Elsewhere, a lesson in human anatomy proved disastrous, as did O’Brien’s interest in the small stick Jin Shil sometimes used to discipline students. “You’re weird!” Jin Shil exclaimed after O’Brien detailed his naughty schoolboy fantasy.
“I’m not weird!” he insisted. “Well I’m weird. Didn’t you look me up on the Internet before I came here? I’m famous for being weird. I’m a grade A creep!”
