Director Denis Villeneuve follows his searing drug war drama Sicario with a surprising pivot to sci-fi. In the new trailer for his upcoming feature Arrival, aliens have landed on Earth. The fate of humanity is in the hands of one person: Amy Adams.
The actress plays Dr. Louise Banks, an expert linguist tasked by the American government with deciphering the language of the space invaders. Her quiet narration opens the trailer and sets the scene for the cataclysmic impact of the UFO landings. “There are days that define your story beyond your life,” she says.
Dr. Banks joins an elite crew of preliminary investigators, including mathematician Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and U.S. Army Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker). The teams try to establish a peaceful relationship with the mysterious newcomers. But widespread panic across the globe has thrown major governments into disarray and created international chaos.
