Was Hillary’s ‘May the Force Be With You’ a Nod to Donor J.J. Abrams?
Hillary Clinton closed out the Democratic debate Saturday by telling the crowd in New Hampshire and the viewers at home, “Thank you, goodnight, and may the force be with you.”
It was a mic-drop moment met by thunderous applause from the audience. But whatever delight there was to be wrung out of that seemingly spontaneous bit of levity was fleeting: Twitter users quickly pointed out the fact that J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and his wife Kathleen McGrath each donated $500,000 to the Clinton-supporting super PAC Priorities USA in June.
Beyonce is always on beat, and Hillary is always on message.
Abrams may have appreciated the plug, but it’s not like his new film needed it: The seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise earned $120.5 million in its first day, obliterating the previous single-day record of $91 million, set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011.
