‘The Walking Dead’: Watch Explosive Season Eight Preview

“Next season … will be very action-packed and very fast-paced. I counted six explosions in the trailer alone,” Robert Kirkman promises

The Walking Dead previewed its upcoming eighth season at Comic Con Friday with an explosive five-minute reel that hints at the many battles the zombie series has in store.

“We have all kinds of great stuff planned. Our next season … will be very action-packed and very fast-paced. I counted six explosions in the trailer alone,” Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman joked at the Comic Con panel.

The five-minute sizzle reel offered a glimpse at all the upcoming confrontations – which seem to focus more on man vs. man battles than zombie fights – with extended looks at series favorites like Maggie, Ezekiel, Michonne, Daryl and the villain Negan.

Following all the action, the preview concludes with a calm, dreamlike scene that finds series protagonist Rick, with a long beard, waking up from his coma. Earlier in the trailer, Rick says in voiceover, “That bigger world is ours, by right. Those who use and kill, we end them. Everything we’ve beaten, everything we’ve endured, everything we’ve risen above, everything we’ve become — no matter what comes next, we’ve won. We’ve already won!”

It wasn’t all good news for Walking Dead fans as news leaked out of Comic Con that Kirkman revealed he was nearing the end of the story. However, Kirkman clarified on Twitter soon after, “I am NOT ending The Walking Dead comic. I simply said I know how it ends. Don’t fall for click bait articles.”

The panel also included a tribute to stuntman John Bernecker, who was recently killed in an on-set accident, The Hollywood Reporter writes.

“We didn’t know if we should do this panel today. But we wanted to be here for you and do something for John,” showrunner Scott M. Gimple said. “John was someone who was beloved in the stunt community. He was living his dream, and he helped other people do the same.”

Kirkman also remembered “Godfather of the Living Dead” George A. Romero. “My first experience watching Night of the Living Dead… and just going on that ride for the first time and seeing what a zombie story could be,” Kirkman said of the director who died July 16th. “I was instantly in love with the genre and the man as a filmmaker. … I couldn’t be more upset about that loss.”

The Walking Dead‘s Season Eight premieres October 22nd.
