‘Sherlock’ Sets Victorian Special Premiere Date, Reveals First Trailer

90-minute special will air in both U.S. and U.K. on same day

Exactly two years after the third season of Sherlock premiered on the BBC, the series – a modern update of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective with Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role – will return with a special 90-minute episode, but with a twist: Instead of contemporizing Doyle’s stories, the one-off episode will take place in Victorian times.

The special, titled The Abominable Bride, will air on both PBS’ Masterpiece and the BBC on January 1st, marking the first time Sherlock has shared a U.S.-U.K. premiere date, The Hollywood Reporter writes. The partnership between the BBC and PBS previously dictated a gap between British and American premieres, but that window was closed in an effort to stem online piracy of the series, Entertainment Weekly reports.

A trailer for the 90-minute one-off episode was also unveiled, with Holmes and Martin Freeman’s John Watson solving a murder in 19th century London, allowing the series to toy around with many of the staples of Doyle’s writing. At one point, Watson demands the detective put on his iconic deerstalker headwear because “You’re Sherlock Holmes, wear the damn hat.”

In addition to the 90-minute special, Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat recently revealed that production on the series’ fourth season – which will return to present-day London – would begin in spring 2016. Although both Cumberbatch’s and Freeman’s popularity have risen since Sherlock debuted in 2010 – Freeman starred in the Fargo series, The Hobbit trilogy and has a role in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, while the Oscar-nominated Cumberbatch will headline to Marvel’s Doctor Strange – the actors signed on for the fourth season’s three-episode run.
