Just as he’s settling into his new Late Night hosting gig, Seth Meyers is getting a taste of prime-time – as host of this year’s Emmy Awards. The ceremony, the 66th edition overall, will air live from L.A.’s Nokia Theatre on August 25th. NBC announced the news on Thursday, highlighting their confidence in the multi-talented writer-host.

Seth Meyers’ Late Night Gamble: ‘SNL’ Vet Moves to Jimmy Fallon’s Desk

“Seth’s expertise and ease in front of a live audience during his time at SNL, as well as his comedic brilliance both as a writer and in front of the camera on SNL and Late Night, makes him the perfect choice to host the Emmys,” said Paul Telegdy, head of NBC’s late night and alternative programming, in a statement.

“Seth is such a talented performer and writer, and we know he will bring something unique to hosting the Prime-time Emmy Awards,” added Bruce Rosenblum, chief executive and chairman of the Television Academy.

If anybody has the versatile chops needed for this high-profile gig, it’s Meyers. Before taking over the Late Night reigns from Jimmy Fallon back in February, he spent over a decade on SNL, taking over as head writer and Weekend Update host in 2006. He also hosted the ESPYs in 2010 and 2011.

But Meyers has a big task ahead of him: Last year’s Emmy ceremony, hosted by How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris, brought in 17.6 million viewers – its largest viewership in eight years.
