See Peter Jackson, Adam Savage Geek Out Over ‘2001’ HAL Prop

‘Lord of the Rings’ director, ‘Tested’ host examine lens used to create creepy computer from ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’

In his latest Tested web video, former Mythbusters co-host Adam Savage went to filmmaker Peter Jackson‘s home to see his vast collection of “world-class collection of props, costumes and cinema artifacts that inspired him as a young filmmaker,” the  A.V. Club reports.

The focus of their meeting was an original lens used to create HAL 9000, the disturbing computer from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which belongs to the Lord of the Rings director. Savage and Jackson discussed the “wide-angle Nikon lens” that became one of HAL 9000’s blinking, red “eyes.” Jackson even impersonated the eerie machine’s robotic speech (“Hi, Dave – how are you?”) as a giddy Savage studied the “magnificent” device.

Jackson said he acquired the lens 10 years ago, but wasn’t able to assemble its pieces until Savage dropped by the Jackson’s “cave” last year and helped him figure it out.

“I tend to focus on … things that made a big impact on me when I was young,” Jackson said of his sprawling prop collection. “I remember seeing 2001, and I remember the effect it had on me.”
