See Lin-Manuel Miranda Recall Hamilton’s Sex Scandal on ‘Drunk History’

Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale star as Treasury Secretary, James Monroe in new clip

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda retells the scintillating story of Alexander Hamilton’s Reynolds Pamphlet with inebriated glee in the latest clip from his upcoming appearance on Drunk History

The story behind the first major sex scandal in American politics centered around Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds, which was exposed after her husband blackmailed the Treasury Secretary. Other government officials, including future president James Monroe, also learned of the affair, accused Hamilton of embezzling money to pay off Reynolds and then leaked the story to the newspapers. Hamilton, in response, refuted the embezzlement accusations and detailed the affair in the 98-page Reynolds Pamphlet – or as Miranda calls it – “Dick 101.”

The clip features Arrested Development co-stars Alia Shawkat and Tony Hale portraying Hamilton and Monroe, respectively, while Miranda narrates. “The whole thing reads like a Dear Penthouse letter,” Miranda quips about the Reynolds Pamphlet, while elsewhere Shakwat sleazily mouths his certainly-accurate dialog from Hamilton’s encounter with Maria Reynolds: “I could give her money, or I could fuck her – and either one is acceptable.”

Drunk History‘s Hamilton episode airs tonight, November 29th, at 10:30 p.m. ET on Comedy Central. The episode also stars Aubrey Plaza, Dave Grohl, David Wain and Bokeem Woodbine.
