See John Malkovich Eerily Play ‘Twin Peaks’ Log Lady

Clip comes from recently launched Playing Lynch art project

“Hello again. My log has something to tell you,” John Malkovich says at the start of his latest installment in his Playing Lynch. He’s dressed in a red wig with big glasses and is made to look like Catherine E. Coulson’s Log Lady character on Twin Peaks.“Our world is a magical smoke screen,” he says. “How should we interpret the happy song of the meadowlark or the robust flavor of a wild strawberry?”

The vignette is one of several that Malkovich filmed for Playing Lynch, a vehicle for the David Lynch Foundation and its mission to teach people who suffer trauma about transcendental meditation. In addition to Twin Peaks’ Log Lady and Special Agent Dale Cooper, he also filmed scenes in which he played characters from Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man and Eraserhead. A new one is being revealed every day this week.

“We would have the actual scenes playing over and over on a TV set and he could watch it,” director Sandro Miller recently told The Wall Street Journal. “He would be saying his lines, moving his mouth and his nose – it’s like watching this clay ball morph into something real.”

People can “unlock” each vignette by donating money; in return they can also download music from a David Lynch Foundation benefit concert last year, which features music by composer Angelo Badalamenti, Sky Ferreira, Zola Jesus and others.
