See ‘Daily Show’ Crew Reenact Stephen Colbert’s Last Day as Correspondent

The Daily Show crew circa 2005 reminisced about Stephen Colbert‘s last day as a correspondent in a sketch that featured Samantha Bee, Jon Stewart, Ed Helms, Rob Corddry and “Steve Carell,” played by John Oliver. The skit opened The Late Show‘s episode-long Daily Show reunion. 

“Just seeing those guys, it really takes me back. I can still remember my last day at The Daily Show like it was yesterday,” Colbert said. “I can’t put it into words but I can put it into flashback.”

The Ed Sullivan Theatre transformed into the Daily Show break room, where a soul-patched Colbert is boxing up his things in anticipation of his move to The Colbert Report. One by one, his fellow correspondents drop in to say goodbye and search for their missing yogurt. 

“I can’t believe you’re leaving in the middle of the George W. Bush administration. There’s never gonna be another president this good for comedy. This guy does something ridiculous at least once a month,” Bee said. “I know there’s one thing for sure: There is no scenario where I will ever say, ‘God, I wish George W. Bush was president,'” pointedly looking directly into the camera.

Helms, Corddry and “Carell” – with post-Colbert correspondent Oliver filling in for the unavailable “serious actor” – are next to bid farewell to their cast mate.

It’s soon revealed that Stewart himself is the yogurt thief, with the host freaking out about having to do another Daily Show the day after filming an episode of the Daily Show; “It’s a daily show, Jon. You have to do it everyday,” Helms said.

The sketch ended with the Daily Show team joining hands for their pre-show mantra: “Go liberal agenda!”
