Ricky Gervais to Return as Golden Globes Host
Hollywood has officially been put on blast as producers for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards announced Monday that Ricky Gervais will return as the ceremony’s host after a three-year reprieve for celebrities. The comedian was known for doling out scathing burns during his opening monologues when he hosted the event from 2010 to 2012. Gervais’ appearance at the 72nd annual event was also among the highlights from that ceremony. The 73rd Golden Globes will air January 10th on NBC.
“I’m making a list. I’m checking it twice. Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice,” Gervais ominously tweeted about compiling celebrity targets for his opening monologue before taking aim at one mark in particular. “Now I want Donald Trump to stop saying things until the day before the Golden Globes. It’s a good job I’m drunk. Otherwise the thought of hosting the Golden Globes again would seem like a real pain in the arse.”
Gervais’ controversial monologues prided themselves on rubbing celebrities in attendance the wrong way: In 2011, the comedian joked of the Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie dud The Tourist, “It seems like everything this year was three dimensional – except the characters in The Tourist,” with cameras then locking on an unamused Depp. Gervais’ abrasive monologues were later the focus of an episode of Life’s Too Short where Depp got his revenge on the British comedian.
The Office star’s return as Golden Globes host comes after an acclaimed three-year co-hosting run by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. “We’re excited to have Ricky Gervais back to host the most enjoyable awards show of the season in his own inimitable way,” NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement. “Disarming and surprising, Ricky is ready to honor — and send up — the best work of the year in film and television. Fasten your seat belts.”
