Earlier this month, news broke that actor David Morrisseywho plays the Governor on The Walking Dead – would voice Morrissey for the audiobook recording. Many thought it was just a marketing trick drummed up by clever publishers. But the actor tells Rolling Stone that it didn’t go down quite like that. “He asked me to do it,” says Morrissey. “He knew my work and made the request. I finished it last week.”

Though a veteran stage and screen actor, Morrissey had never taken on an audiobook before. Still, he studied the manuscript carefully to figure out Moz’s prose. “I read the book very slowly to get the rhythms right,” he says. “It took me seven days, a bit more than their allotted time. But it was important to get that tone right.” Morrissey himself is a longtime Smiths fan, so he felt a particular badge of honor in getting this gig. “I’m such a big fan,” he says. “It’s a fascinating read. It’s brilliantly written, and there are passages that are hilariously funny – that I loved reading.”
