A film adaptation of Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda’s debut musical, In the Heights, has been revived by the Weinstein Company, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Universal was developing an In the Heights movie with screenwriter Marc Klein (Serendipity) and director Kenny Ortega, but dropped the project in 2011 over casting difficulties and its proposed $37 million budget. The Weinstein Company will likely bring on a new director and writer, and while Miranda will be heavily involved in the film, it’s unclear whether he will reprise his role as the show’s main character, Usnavi.

Set in the titular Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, In the Heights featured a large ensemble cast that centered around Usnavi, a bodega owner who grapples with closing his shop and returning to his native Dominican Republic after his grandmother wins the lottery.

Miranda began writing the music and lyrics for In the Heights while still in college, and later teamed with Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the book. The show garnered numerous accolades during an off-Broadway run and debuted on Broadway in 2008, eventually winning four Tonys including Best Musical. It continues to tour the world.

News of the In the Heights movie revival comes as Miranda’s Hamilton continues its Broadway reign. The musical debuted last February, has brought in millions at the box office and garnered a record-setting 16 Tony nominations. The show has also kickstarted Miranda’s film career, with the actor set to play Jack in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, which will arrive in 2018.

The 2016 Tony Awards nominations were announced and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘Hamilton’ got a record-breaking 16 nominations.
