Justin Timberlake’s Folk Classic From ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ – Premiere

Singer gets in character as a Greenwich Village folkie

Inside Llewyn Davis, the latest film from Joel and Ethan Coen, stars Justin Timberlake and Carey Mulligan alongside Oscar Isaac, who plays the title character’s down-on-his-luck folk singer. The film opens in New York and Los Angeles this Friday. Loosely based on the nearly forgotten folk-singer Dave Van Ronk (and inspired by his posthumous memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street), the film follows Davis for a week as he couch-surfs around Greenwich Village in 1961, just before Bob Dylan arrives to change the folk game. (Ethan Coen told Rolling Stone the film’s visual reference point was actually the cover of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan).

In this clip Davis’ fellow musicians Jim (Timberlake), Jean (Mulligan) and Troy (Stark Sands) harmonize Hedy West’s winsome folk classic “Five Hundred Miles” at the famed Gaslight Café, evoking a young Peter, Paul and Mary. The film’s soundtrack is helmed by T Bone Burnett in his fourth collaboration with the Coen brothers and co-produced with Marcus Mumford (Mulligan’s husband), who also performs on several tracks.

John Goodman, F. Murray Abraham and Girls stars Adam Driver and Alex Karpovsky also appear in the film. The Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack is out now.
