Jon Stewart: ‘Donald Trump Is a Repudiation of Republicans’

“America is an anomaly … and Trump’s candidacy animated that thought,” said former ‘Daily Show’ host

Jon Stewart offered a sober take on Donald Trump‘s election, the Republican party and the inherent challenges of a culturally diverse democracy on CBS This Morning.

Speaking with Charlie Rose, the former Daily Show host said America was not a fundamentally different country than it was before the election. He also predicted Republicans will have a “come to Jesus” moment about the power of government when they start reaping the benefits of it. “Donald Trump is a repudiation of Republicans,” Stewart said.

Stewart also cautioned liberals against intolerance. So much of what liberals fight for is that people shouldn’t be judged as “monoliths,” Stewart said, and by that logic, “defining Trump supporters by the worst of his rhetoric” is ignorant. “That hypocrisy is also real in this country,” Stewart said.

Speaking indirectly to those who have felt disenfranchised and disillusioned about America after the election, Stewart offered a wider take. “America is an anomaly in the world,” he said, “And Trump’s candidacy animated that thought, that a multicultural democracy is impossible – but that’s what America is!”

“This is the fight that we wage against ourselves and each other, because America is not natural,” Stewart said. “Natural is tribal. We’re fighting against thousands of years of human behavior and history to create something that no one’s ever – that’s what’s exceptional about America. And this ain’t easy.”

Since election night, U.S. cities and towns have rung with protests. Here’s why Anti-Trump protests matter.
