Watch John Oliver Talk Trump, Brexit Chaos on ‘Colbert’

‘Last Week Tonight’ host awarded ‘Late Show’ Lifetime Achievement Award for most interview appearances

John Oliver delivered a double-shot of depressing takes about the looming possibilities of both a second term for President Donald Trump and a “no deal” Brexit on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday.

After a friendly discussion about the Last Week Tonight host’s slowly-atrophying features, Oliver and Colbert turned to the chaos of the political sphere. Oliver said he wasn’t so optimistic as to believe that Trump wouldn’t win again, but there was at least some sort of end in sight, he joked: “We all have something to aim at, we all have a finish line, like in a marathon, that we can try and stumble over, be covered in a silver cape and have someone say, ‘You really shouldn’t have done that.'”

After Colbert asked if the goal was to just stay alive until January 2025, Oliver quipped, “I think that’s what we all have to do, all of us – especially Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

Colbert then asked the British-born Oliver to help Americans feel better about themselves by discussing the current state of Brexit. As Oliver recounted, Britain voted to leave the European Union two years ago and the country is on the verge of finally doing so, but without an actual deal in place.

“It’s like saying to someone who’s just jumped out of an airplane without a parachute, ‘What does this mean?'” Oliver cracked. “I guess it means a massive exercise in confidence. Let’s hope this works out for you, I don’t really see what your end plan is here.”

Later in the interview, Colbert presented Oliver with a special Late Show Lifetime Achievement Award, as his appearance Monday made him the program’s most-interviewed guest, surpassing Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. The honor came with a sash, a bouquet of roses and a tiara, which Oliver proudly displayed before asking, “Does this work like the PGA, do I have to hand this to him when he takes it back?” After Colbert nodded, “Yes,” Oliver cracked, “Alright, I guess I’ll see Bernie here with some dead flowers.”
