Watch Jimmy Kimmel Catch People Lying About Midterm Voting
Everyone wants an “I Voted” sticker or hashtag, but not everyone wants to bother earning it. Jimmy Kimmel Live tested that premise on Monday’s episode with the latest installment of “Lie Witness News,” surveying ordinary Americans about casting their ballots in the 2018 midterm election – days before they were capable of doing so.
The fake on-the-street news crew grilled a handful of people who falsely claimed they’d already cast their ballot, earning a hilarious level of detail in response. They started slow, asking about lines and wait times: “It was super busy,” one man said. “A lot of people were coming out, and more people want to be involved in voting, so it was really cool to see that.”
But as the answers grew more specific, the answers became increasingly funny. Participants noted that their polling places demanded a credit card to vote and offered complimentary chocolate chip cookies; others, afraid of being caught in a lie, admitted they did indeed vote for “school district student body president” and to make “medicinal aspirin illegal” (“With any type of medication, it can be addictive, so you just have to be careful”).
The piece ended, fittingly, with the interviewer offering “I Voted” stickers – but only if the responders swore they took part. “I had [a sticker] earlier, but it came off, so thank you,” one woman enthused.
