Jimmy Fallon, Oprah Winfrey Relive Pitch-Shifted Soap Opera Years

Jimmy Fallon and Oprah Winfrey strolled down melodramatic memory lane on The Tonight Show Monday night, presenting several rare clips from their little-known, short-lived and pitch-shifted Eighties soap opera, Midnight Meadows.

While both had fond memories of their time on set, they each remembered the director’s peculiar flair for soaking their dialogue in vocal effects. In one episode, Fallon confronts a possibly unfaithful Winfrey, and a high-pitched fight ensues: His harangue about being “a man who knows when he’s not being treated like a man,” and Winfrey’s cackling response, plays out like a conversation between Alvin and the Chipmunks — and ends in a vicious slap to the face.

Though Winfrey and Fallon had to get out of costume and rush back to the desk after each clip, they gamely continued the breathless bit with a scene from the couple’s “conscious uncoupling.” Recalling their fondest memories of each other in the dulcet tones of Darth Vader, Fallon tells Winfrey he’ll always remember her laugh, eliciting a hearty bellow and another spine-tingling slap from his former paramour. 

And while Fallon had to convince a fatigued Winfrey that there was actually a third episode of Midnight Meadows, it was worth it to hear the couple reconcile their relationship in auto-tune. The heartwarming scene takes a sour turn when Fallon finds a strange set of car keys, but Winfrey quickly assuages his fears singing, “Those keys belong to you! Because those are the keys to your — Brand! New! Car!” Check it out above.
